Eat Well, Live Well

Take note! March is National Nutrition Month, a month designated by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) to remind us to pay attention to our own and our families' nutrition. It should be obvious to everyone that good nutrition should be considered 365 days a year, not just during the month of March.

This year's healthy eating reminder adds a playful element to the message. Celebrate a World of Flavors, the theme for 2022, celebrates cultures, cuisines, and inclusion. It's exciting to consider embracing the cuisines and flavors of other cultures and countries. If you have a curious palate, take the time to experiment with new recipes and prepare a few new dishes while keeping a healthy diet in mind.

Many chronic medical conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and digestive issues, can be improved by thinking about what and how we eat in a deliberate and mindful manner. That can be intimidating. Seeking the assistance of a registered dietitian-nutritionist (RDN) can assist you in developing a plan and then coaching you through the steps necessary to establish healthy eating habits and lifestyle changes.

Week 1. Consume a Wide Range of Nutritious Foods

  • Include foods from all food groups that are nutritious.
  • Discover how to decipher Nutrition Facts labels.
  • Include your favorite ethnic foods and traditions.

Week 2. Consult with a Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist (RDN)
  • Request a referral to an RDN from your doctor.
  • Find an RDN who specializes in your specific requirements.
  • Receive personalized nutrition advice to help you reach your health objectives.
Week 3. Make a plan for your meals and snacks
  • Choose healthy recipes to prepare throughout the week.
  • To shop for nutritious foods, make a grocery list.
  • When you're away from home, make healthy food and drink choices.
Week 4. Make delicious foods at home
  • Learn how to cook and prepare meals.
  • Experiment with new flavors and foods from around the world.
  • When possible, share your meals with friends or family.
Be a world-class gourmet. Practice learning about the world of flavors. Gather a group of friends for a meal where each person prepares and brings a dish from a country or region of the United States that you haven't visited before.

Most importantly, make every meal a healthy meal on a daily basis. Good food is the best medicine.
