Mirror by Vincent van Gogh

On March 30, 1852, Anna Cornelia Carbentus and Rev. Theodorus Van Gogh gave birth to their first child, Vincent Willem Van Gogh, in the southern Netherlands. The baby was still delivered. One year later, on the same day, another baby with the same name was born to the couple.

During Vincent Van Gogh's lifetime (1853-1890), he created approximately 2,100 works of art, but there were few indications that he would become one of, if not the, greatest artist of his generation, if not of all time. However, it was clear that Van Gogh was destined to live a complicated and troubled life, both physically and mentally, culminating in the loss of one ear and eventual suicide.

He once wrote to his sister, "(I am) two different beings, one marvelously gifted, fine and delicate, the other selfish and heartless." Later, his paintings explored this paradox by using opposing colors that revealed his contradictory character and emotions, and perhaps ours as well.

During his struggling career, Van Gogh invited celebrated French artist Paul Gauguin to join him in Arles, France. During their time together, Gauguin went for a walk after verbally fighting, and Van Gogh followed him with a razor. They got into another argument, and Van Gogh went home. According to one version of events, after returning home, Van Gogh heard voices telling him to take the razor and cut off his ear.

Dr. Felix Rey took care of Vincent after the ear incident, treating him both physically and mentally. They became fast friends, and Vincent eventually moved in with him. Van Gogh left Dr. Rey with a painting titled Portrait of Doctor Felix Ray, which he gave to his friend. Dr. Rey disliked it and used it to cover a hole in a chicken coop before giving it away. It is now worth $50,000,000.

The darkness in Van Gogh's life is well known and far beyond what most of us will ever know. The light is equally strong. The beauty of Starry Night or any of his eleven "Sunflower" paintings is captivating. Van Gogh painted one of his most famous paintings during a period of great happiness.

What is it that distinguishes one artist from another? It's a mystery that's always changing. Art is valued because of one's personal connection to it. Art expresses what one is feeling at the time. It has worth because we give it worth.

I've been thinking a lot lately. At times, it appears to me that the entire world has no idea where it is going. Looking into the starry night has helped me see the promise of Spring and recognize that there is hope even in the midst of dark days.

As I write this in the middle of March, refugees crossing the Ukraine-Poland border are greeted by a pianist who plays songs in these darkest of days, as countless strangers enter an unknown future. In the midst of despair, there is a dance for hope. A sunflower blooms. While YoYo Ma performs in front of our Russian Embassy, a concert featuring Beethoven's Ode to Joy is held in a Kyiv city circle. The almond blossoms will appear. Even in the face of unspeakable tragedy and evil, there is hope for the future. "I have a need," Ukraine's president Zelensky confesses. The dance for hope and peace necessitates action.
